What is a RIP?

‘RIP’ stands for Raster Image Processor. It originates from the handling of raster / bitmap or vector data for Postscript, and it’s conversion to the raster information required to print. In practice, RIP can be used to mean anything from a very simple application like the Piezography BW that ‘RIPs’ a greyscale file, and controls the printer and how it prints... right through to applications like ImagePrint that also controls the printer, but also provides numerous controls of page layout, colour and greyscale support, automated printing, and so on.
