The term RIP can mean many things in relation to printing of data. Historically, it tended to imply printing Postscript data; but that is not so true now that there are so many other options of file formats in use. ImagePrint, for example, can be purchased in ‘Raster only’ versions that are not capable of printing Postscript data... yet still giving you all the functionality of page layout, colour management options, and so on.
