What is monitor calibration and profiling, and why do you need to do it? Well, a calibrator helps you select and calibrate to a ‘colour temperature’ of (typically) 5000K or 6500K and a tone-response (gamma) of 1.8 or 2.2. With these products, calibration is carried out using the monitor’s controls and your choices of setting. Having selected the calibration we wish for, the profiling is done... that is, the actual colours produced by the monitor are recorded, and used to create an ICC profile that can then used to help ensure that colours displayed on the screen are accurate. Product Tree | Level | Product | Description | | Introductory | Adobe Gamma | A useful tool to help with basic monitor calibration, provided free with products like Adobe Photoshop. However, this only calibrates, and does not profile. Much improvements can be made to this product - but hey - it’s free! | | Beginner | ColorVision ColorPlus | The original LCD/CRT Monitor Spyder with ColorPlus software (Windows only). The software guides you through the profiling process, but does not offer you any real option for controlling the process. Of course, as a hardware-based profiling tool, you can expect this to be a far more reliable and repeatable than Adobe Gamma. Overall, we would anticipate that most of our customers would benefit from products of a higher level, such as the Spyder2 or Spyder2PRO Studio (see below). | | Better | ColorVision Monitor Spyder2 | The new Spyder2 with it’s new software is ColorVision’s mid-range monitor profiling solution.
