Why use a CIS?

Other than Cost Savings, there are several reasons for using a CIS. Firstly, it does enable you a greater choice of ink supplies than basic Epson inks. You can choose cheap bulk inks for general purpose use, wide gamut inks, Archival / Pigment inks, Greyscale inks, and so on. Epson think you should stick with Dye inks in their ‘Dye’ printers and Pigment inks in their ‘Pigment’ printers. A CIS system gives you far greater choice of ink supplier, as many ink manufacturers can only supply ink in bottles. A CIS system opens up a world of choice! Additionally, the special CIS models for the ‘chipped’ cartridges always read 100% full! Click for more information on Chipped Cartridges.

By reducing the cost of the ink in your system, you help reduce the guilt factor of actually using it! We know some of our customers hope to sell their work, and so this is not such an issue - but if you want to distribute prints to friends and family, or are looking to improve your digital skills, you may need to know you are doing so with the best possible value.

Cartridges do prove a real source of ink wastage - when any one colour in the colour cart is approaching empty (typically the yellow), the whole cartridge is considered to be nearing empty. Additionally, cartridges tend to start under-performing as they empty, as ink gets held up in a foam of air and ink inside the cartridge. This can contribute to occasional nozzle misfires.

We are even sceptical of the latest ranges of ‘Single Ink Cartridge’ printers where 6 or even 7 separate, small cartridges are used. Certainly, these will result in less ink being thrown away, but actually will increase the amount of money that you have to spend on a ‘full set’ of ink. For Epson’s latest 2100 printer (7 colour, 7-cart)the cost of a set of carts is about £80, compared to a set of carts for the 1290 (6 colour, 2 cart) now costing ‘only’ £37.
