Chipped Cartridge Information for CIS

Let's See What we have Here!

This page tells you what you need to know about the NoMoreCarts Continuous Inking Systems for printers with ‘Chipped’ cartridges. Before reading this section, you may like to check that you have read the General Information about the CIS.

What do you mean ‘Chipped Cartridge’?

Some time ago, Epson introduced printers that used cartridges with a little microchip on them, known as ‘Intellidge’. These chips were sensed by the printer, and told the printer how much ink was in the cartridge; when the ink reading got to a certain level, that was it - the ink would have to be changed. No chip meant the printer would not print, so many people lost their option to use third party inks... you couldn’t even re-fill an Epson original cartridge.

Since first writing this document, Intellidge cartridges have become the norm for all new Epson printers. There are now several versions of the chips out there, in different cartridge designs, and regrettably we can not support all of these different systems. Please see our Supported Printers pages for a list of all the supported printers at this time.

How does this CIS work then?

The CIS systems that we provide have a special chip on them that always reads 100% full. Effectively, it is a read-only chip that the printer can not update. This means that you should never need to go through a cartridge initialisation cycle again! However, some printers only appear to read the cartridge when powered-up, and keep their own track of ink levels, and pass this information along to the Epson Status Monitor. As a result, the on-screen display may show the ink-levels dropping. After many prints, the printer may need to be turned off for a few seconds, at which time the 100% full cartridge chip will be read again, and the printer will show the cartridges as being full again.

Please note that the 1270 CIS system will work on the 1280 (US model) and the 1290 (UK model) printers. It will not work on the 2000P, which uses a different chip.

Even More Reasons to Buy a CIS

The Epson ‘Light fast’ inks supplied with printers such as the 1270 have a cyan ink that is sensitive to ozone. Unless your prints are protected behind glass or plastic sleeve, the air may cause the cyan ink to disappear rapidly, leaving your prints with an orange cast. You may wish to avoid this issue by using alternative inks, but to do so, you need a way past the issues of the chipped cartridges. This CIS gives you just that.

The NoMoreCarts CIS we supply comes with ‘virgin’ (never-used) cartridges. That means you don’t have to try and wash ink out of a part-used cartridge or flush one ink with another by printing - both virtually impossible!

The latest CIS comes with a brand new vacuum pump design which makes it even easier to prime to system.

When a company changes the specifications of their ink (as Epson appears to have done recently with their ‘Made in China A* series cartridges) they may do so without warning, and with bad results for the user. When you use bulk inks, you are effectively isolating yourself from such issues for a much longer period of time. If your demands for colour accuracy are great, or your ink usage particularly high, you may like to consider purchasing several sets of ink from the same batch to ensure colour conistency for thousands of prints! At our-bulk ink prices, this is now an affordable proposition!
