Costing Ink Usage with CIS and OEM Cartridges

Let's See What we have Here!

Large image of 1270 CISCost justifications for the CIS are provided here for the following printer / ink combinations:

Please note that we do not factor our postage and packaging costs into the figures below, or some optional extras like our bottle racks.

Epson 1270 / 1290 with P&P Dye Inks

We recently costed up the use of our P&P dye inks with Epson OEM cartridges. As we did not have any test data of our own on the before-and-after print weights of Epson carts for a 1270, a search of the web revealed the following figures: in a T009 Colour cartridge, there is approximately 8cc of usable ink in each colour position, and in a T007 Black cartridge, 11cc. Using these figures, and an assumption that 4oz of ink = 110cc (we supply 125cc bottles), we get that a set of 6 colour bottles is equivalent to 14 colour cartridges, and 10 black cartridges. That’s about £294 worth of Epson OEM colour carts, and £185 of black cartridges... at loosely Epson prices a total of £479. (Prices of cartridges from buyepson.co.uk on 30/3/04).

Here are the figures:

CIS unit for 1270/80/90
£255
14 Color cartridges (£20.97 ea)
£294
+ Six 125ml bottles of Plug and Play ink (Bought as a set)

10 Black cartridges (£18.53 each)
£185

----------

----------
Total Cost
£255

£479

That’s a saving of £224! And, you still have the CIS! If you bought more ink, you’d pay another £60, and that would pay for another bunch of prints. Ink costs become about a penny per (photo) print, and you would save about £419 on the equivalent ink cartridges from Epson!

And of course, this particular model CIS, whilst more expensive due to the chip, is also compatible with three different printers! So if you need to change your printer, you can move the CIS onto the new one. In fact, if you were to buy a replacement set of chips, you could even use this CIS on a 2000P!

For a 2000P with G4 inks:

CIS unit for 2000P
£290
14 Color cartridges (@ £31 each)
£437
+ Six 125ml bottles of Generations Enhanced G4 pigmented ink (Bought as a set)

10 Black cartridges (@£27 each)
£270

----------

----------
Total Cost
£290

£707

Saving you £417 by the end of your first set of bottles, and £617 per set of bottles thereafter. (Prices of cartridges from buyepson.co.uk on 30/3/04).

Epson 1160 with P&P dye inks

Applying the same logic for the 1160CIS with Dye inks, you could SAVE over £253! (14 colour carts and 6 black carts costing about £403, the CIS with ink costing £150)... and that’s just ‘year one’. Get through another lot of ink and you’ll pay £38 instead of £403 which is saving over 90% on your ink cost!

Epson 2100 with UL pigment inks

For the Epson 2100, we reckon there is somewhere between 10 and 12cc of useable ink in each cartridge (there is probably about 15ml in all) - if we are correct, this means a 125ml bottle easily covers the equivalent of 10 full cartridges. Whilst Epson cartridge prices do vary somewhat with colour or black position, the price of a set of 7 cartridges seems to come in at £83.36 - that means £833.60 for ten complete sets!!!

In comparison, purchasing a 2100 CIS with 7 bottles of UL ink purchased separately will cost a total of £434.75 (not including postage or optional items). That is a saving of £398.85 by the end of your first set of bottles!!! Go through an extra set of bottles... and you will pay us £164.50 + postage... compared to that £833.60 for the equivalent number of OEM cartridges!!! That is saving you over 80% on your ink costs!

But remember - a CIS does not just justify itself on cost - it gives you the choice to use specialist inks that Epson do not provide.
